A bill collector knocked on the door of a country debtor.
“Is Fred home?” he asked the woman who answered the door.
“Sorry,” the woman replied. “Fred’s gone for cotton.”
The next day the collector tried again. “Is Fred here today?”
“No, sir,” she said, “I’m afraid Fred has gone for cotton.”
When he returned the third day he humphed, “I suppose Fred is gone for cotton again,?”
“No,” the woman answered solemnly, ”Fred died yesterday.”
Suspicious that he was being avoided, the collector decided to wait a week and investigate the cemetery himself. But sure enough, there was poor Fred’s tombstone, with this inscription: “Gone, But Not for Cotton.”

I just wanted to add a footnote to my comment regarding the INTENTIONAL FINANCIAL COLLAPSE. These CRIMINALS, the TOP3%,(The Banks and Wall Street) STOLE ALL OF OUR WEALTH AND TOOK IT OUT OF OUR COUNTRY. NOW THEY ARE TRYING TO LEAVE US HOLDING THE FILTHY BAG OF UNSECURED DEBT. This Country has become no more than an Oligarchy run by dictators and a Kleptocracy as well.THEY want to turn WE THE PEOPLE into a country of DEBTOR SLAVES. I expect a tax revolt to be the next shoe to drop. I do think the American People are now wise to what has occured here and know they are now going to try to tax us all out of homes and businesses if they can not fraudclose. The whole country needs to go Bankrupt and over with a clean slate and a complete restructuring of our financial system. Making the people who are already struggling pay for this financial disaster will be another disasterous outcome. This Government needs to stop trying to ignore and excuse these CRIMINALS and PROSECUTING THEM.The Government needs to stop treating WE THE PEOPLE like the criminals and put the blame where it belongs. The Banks and Wall Street caused this disaster of epic now they need to be made to account for it and all of the missing money and be punished to the fullest extent of the law for it.
the way things are going, six figures are about what going to take to get the ends to meet. I make what in 1990 would have been a pretty big salary, but in 2010 going into 2011, I am shining on one bill collector (a different one) each month because my pay cover all the living expenses needed to feed my family and keep a roof over my head.
good attempt, you may want to act quickly to see if you are not involve in any form of identity theft. requesting a free from the 3 major credit bureau will be a good idea but will not give you details about your credit. rather pay (in most cases $1 for the first month and about) $10 monthly) for a detailed also request access to your credit online and you can view daily progress of your credit.
do this before you call this people and you will on hand know what they will talk about and what to tell them.
As bad as it is to owe money to somebody, it is generally pretty bad to be owed money as well. Businesses need cash to operate, and it can be catastrophic if money that is expected simply fails to materialize. When this occurs, it makes sense to contact a debt collection agency. In the most recent recession many people have ended up being on their debts, so debt collection is a booming business. Therefore, it makes sense that big number of people now want to enter this field.
They are not allowed to threaten you with actions they do not plan or can not legally take. So it really depends on what she is going to tell your employeer. They are allowed to call and Verify your employement and/or income. They can not discuss anything else about your debt with your employeer or anyone else, with the exception of your spouse if you are married. If they do then they are breaking the FCRA and you can sue them for their actions.
You need to get the name of the person who called you when they called you and exactly what they said. If you find out they discussed your debt with them you can take more action. If she does call again, tell her that with the rules of the Fair Credit Act she is not allowed to discuss your debt with anybody else other than you. If she does contact your employeer you will purse legal actions against her and the company.
Yes, under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, the collector must send you a written “validation notice” telling you how much money you owe within five days after they first contact you. This notice also must include the name of the creditor to whom you owe the money, and how to proceed if you don’t think you owe the money.
If they are unwilling to send you proof that this is a valid debt, then you are unwilling to send them any of payment.
DISSSPUTEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act controls how and when collection agencies go about collecting outstanding debts. Congress determined that collection practices were abusive, deceptive, and unfair debt collection practices by many debt collectors. To combat inadequacies in existing laws, the FDCPA was passed. The purpose of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act is to insure collection agencies do not use any abusive collection actions and to make sure there is consistent State action to protect consumers from collection agencies. A large limitation of the FDCPA is that this law only applies to collection agencies, not the original creditor attempting to collect a debt.
don’t u just hate when a debt collector phones ur landline and asks u to verify you are who u are? As if!! who are u mate? so u say whatever
My checking account was liened and garnished by a Chicago collection agency. The woman who processed it enforced it without a summons (I moved…wasnt at my old house to recieve it). The second my tax money was deposited, I couldnt touch it. They summon EVERY SINGLE BANK IN THE STATE AND IT IS A ORDER LIEN…you cannot run from that. Oh, and im also a bill collector. It was funny to be on “the other side” so to speak.
The reason for so many fake people is because of parents. They act like they real around you but let a bill collector call then it get real!
This is pretty scary to think that debt collectors are going so far as to impersonate a friends! I think this all speaks to the manner in which nothing is really “private” as social media grows in scope and popularity. The average Facebook user is probably not aware that their photos can be used against them in a of law, nor are they probably aware that debt collectors are trolling their profile for information.
Social media is making it easier for private lives to become public, whether they like it or not. The trick is to know the boundaries and to be cognizant of what is a reasonable right to privacy on social media.
My dream one day is to send a check to every bill collector with a note that says “Here’s your money, now go to hell.
Anytime your original creditor sells an account to a 3rd debt collector, then the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act applies. However, in terms of legal action, this law does not really make any difference unless any of these are violating the terms of this law, such as making illegal threats or using obscene language. Sending a "cease communications" letter would not stop legal action
